[2] Macintosh Programmer's Workshop 3.4.2 Is Now Downloadable

The current version of Macintosh Programmer's Workshop (MPW) was just posted to the DevWorld web site for free downloading. MPW is a general-purpose development environment that can be used to create 680x0 and PowerPC processor-based Macintosh applications. It includes an editor (MPW Shell), C/C++ compilers, assemblers, linkers, and dozens of useful tools and utilities.

[3] PC Compatibility Software, Version 1.6.4

PC Compatibility 1.6.4 includes improved third-party network card support and Mac OS 8 compatibility for users of PC Compatibility or DOS Compatibility Cards. (Quadra 610 users should use PC Setup 1.0.2 software instead.)

[4] The Workgroup Server Mac OS 8 Update

The Workgroup Server (WGS) Mac OS 8 Update bundle includes the WGS SCSI Manager Update 2.0, WGS 9650 Update Read Me, and Apple RAID 1.5.3 Update. The updates are posted to ensure compatibility between Mac OS 8 and Workgroup Servers 7350 and 9650.

OpenBase International has made OpenBase Network and OpenBase Lite available for PowerPC versions of Rhapsody. This high-performance SQL engine handles all of the complexities of data storage and multiuser communication for end-user applications. [7] Call for Entries for Milia Awards '98

The organizers of the Milia '98 interactive media trade show have announced that the Milia d'Or Awards will be open to all interactive and media publishers this year, providing Apple developers an opportunity to gain international exposure for their products. There will be 14 Milia category awards, three grand prizes, and one special award for the best online game. Awards will be presented on February 10 in a formal ceremony. Milia '98 runs from February 8-11 in Cannes, France. The deadline for submitting entries is November 30, 1997.

[8] Free URL Listing in a Filemaker Pro Cyberstore Directory

FileMaker Pro Shopping Carts on the Web is an online directory of electronic commerce web sites that use Claris FileMaker Pro 3.0 and 4.0 for Windows 95, Windows NT, Windows 3.1, and Mac OS. The directory, maintained by Blue World Communications, allows you to find out which tools other online cyberstores use in selling over the web. Webmasters and developers who use commercial and custom tools for web-enabling FileMaker Pro databases can showcase their sites on this database at no charge, while at the same time qualifying to win a free copy of FileMaker Pro 4.0 and Claris Home Page 2.0, courtesy of Claris.

[9] NPD SofTrends Reports on Strong Mac OS 8 Retail Sales

This week NPD SofTrends, a market research firm, published the results of their U.S. Consumer Software Retail Sales of Operating Systems report. A press release issued by NPD SofTrends said, "Apple took a bite out of key competitor Microsoft's market share during the third quarter, with the introduction of its new Mac OS 8 operating system this summer.

This summer release of OS 8 continued to drive Apple's sales well into the fall, resulting in 577 percent sales growth for Q3 1997 vs. Q3 1996. Mac OS 8 captured 33 percent of unit sales for operating systems from July through September. This represented an increase of 27 percentage points over its 5 percent share for the same time period a year ago."

[10] PowerBook G3 Blasts Past Pentium Notebook in Lab Test

On November 13, the Macworld Lab Test listed Apple's PowerBook G3 as the hands-down winner in a head-to-head comparison between a 250-MHz Macintosh PowerBook G3 and a Gateway 2000 Solo 2300XL (233-MHz MMX Pentium) notebook computer.

[11] Analysts Bullish on Apple's Future

On November 11, MacWEEK Online reported that analysts expect Apple's new G3-based machines to be a hit. In addition, analysts interviewed cited Apple's new way of doing business--including the built-to-order capability and the branded store-within-a-store concept--as reasons for optimism.
